How to Wear Wedge Trainers

The wedge trainer is exactly what it says on the tin a trainer with a wedge.  That said they are not exactly wearable like a trainer or a wedge since they fall somewhere between casual and smart casual. I have to admit to really not liking this trend personally I know shoot me,  I can definitely see why some people would love them though.

I have had a few queries in the last couple of weeks about how to wear them during Spring and Summer. They don’t look good with floaty Summer dresses and wearing them with baggy sports clothes is definitely not the thing to do if you want to look stylish. So, take a look at how to wear wedge trainers for some style inspiration.

1. Casual - they look great paired with skinny jeans and oversized jumpers or tees. If you love patterned or coloured bottoms then wedge trainers can go well paired with either.

2. Tailored Shorts - Tailored styles like shorts paired with a more casual top is a great way of keeping your outfit chic while being totally casual.

3. Sporty Dresses - Floaty floral dresses really don’t work with these trainers but go for something that’s got a sporty feel to it like the above colour blocked dress. They also look good with maxi skirts or dresses but again choose something that has a more sporty or casual feel to it.

I’d love to hear what you are wearing your wedge trainers with so please leave a comment!

Ways to Keep Your Arms Covered in Summer

A reader asks: I love Summer but I am really under confident about the way my upper arms look so I like to keep them covered. The problem I have is that most Summer styles are sleeveless and when I wear things over I’m either too warm or feel dumpy. How can I keep my arms covered and remain cool as well as stylish?

A lot of women are uncomfortable with their upper arms. This part of the body seems to gather extra padding quite easily and even women who are slim can suffer from looser flesh here. As much as I wish we could all, myself included, have arms that resembled Michelle Obama’s I think that while we are waiting for that to happen it is always a good idea to learn ways to camouflage an area of our bodies we are less than comfortable with. So, if that sounds like you and you really want to feel relaxed about your arms then take a look at ways to keep your arms covered in Summer while keeping cool.

Styles for Covering Arms and Keeping Cool in Summer

* If you are concerned about drawing attention to your upper arms, the first thing you should do is avoid wearing anything that ends across that part of the arm, that has pattern that will draw the eye there or even any type of gathering of the fabric that again will draw the eye there. Once you have done that then try one of these styles to keep the attention elsewhere *

1. Wear Sleeves - It sounds obvious I know, but in summer it can be hard to find dresses that have sleeves. You are looking for something in a lightweight fabric like cotton or linen so that you don’t overheat and when you find it consider buying two if it’s in a simple style that will be wearable in the future.

2.  Add Sleeves - No I don’t mean sew sleeves on to your clothing.  What I do mean is that when you find something you love, be it a dress or top, if it is sleeveless then add a lightweight cardigan or a shrug. With shrugs be careful, if you are short-waisted choose them in a colour that is the same as your dress or if you are long-waisted or tall then they can work better in a contrasting colour thus shortening you.

3. Wear a jacket - I know that sounds like you’ll be very hot but summer jackets made from lightweight fabrics and paired with a very light camisole or top under it are actually a really great way to keep cool, keep your arms covered and look chic at the same time

4. Wear a Tunic or Shirt - Tunics are great because they come in all shorts of styles and fabrics meaning you can wearing them during the day or even for slightly more formal evening events. Shirts are another way to keep cool and chic. Try also choosing tops and blouses with bat wings or kimono style sleeves. These are great for camouflaging the arm while being effortlessly stylish.

Friday 5: Swimsuits for Small Busts

Summer can be a time of sheer hell for some women, because we usually spend some time in a swimsuit. If you are body conscious at all then its not a pleasant experience. As our chests are very often a focal point, those women with smaller busts can be quite anxious about putting themselves on display. If you have a small chest yet you would like to be able to frolic about in a bikini when summer gets here without feeling uncomfortable  (anyone based in Ireland I of course mean when you go on holiday, somewhere warm because there is no such thing as an Irish Summer) then try these swimsuit styles for small busts to give your chest a bit of a lift

1. Choose pattern – go for something that has pattern over the chest area only, stripes are best but anything that adds definition on your top is good and try to keep the lower half. dark this will create the illusion that you are bigger on top.

2. Love Ruffles -  Choose bikini or swimsuits that have ruffling or crinkling in the fabric as its makes the bust appear larger. Choosing a padded style also helps to add definition.

3 – Say hello to stripes- as I said above choose stripes but also choose styles that have added material layered over the bustline as shown above, again this gives definition.

4. Bandeau styles – these are great for smaller chests and if you choose a bandeau with a funky pattern like above you will make you chest look even larger.

5. Go for a Tankini -these styles tend to add curves to the body and the bust is no different go one step further and add some fringe detailing.

How important are clothes and make up to you on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being very important?
It used to not be important but I have started to pay more attention in the last years when I left the 20′s, I would say 3.

What’s in your vanity case?
My vanity case is slowly expanding and it is certainly rich in colourful eye pencils that I like to use everyday. Specific products for curly hair are also in it.

What bodyshape do you think you are? Pear/Apple/Hourglass
Hourglass I think.

What colours do you wear the most?
Blue, dark purple and grey are my favourite together with emerald green. I personally do not like to wear black during the day as colours make me and the people around me happier.

What affects or has affected your self-image?
The image I have of myself in my mind is always affected by how happy I am in that moment and if I feel accepted in the situation I am living. Stressful moments when I have not time to take care of myself and my hobbies can have a negative effect on my self-image.I have learnt to recognise those moments and have a break before it becomes uncomfortable. Listening to music on the way to work, reading a pleasant book before sleep, knitting, and cooking my favourite food help a lot in those moments.

How has your relationship with your partner impacted your style and self-image, if at all?    I like to feel appreciated by my partner not only for my appearance but a compliment a day on how I look always helps. We women spend a lot of energy to look pretty and appreciation is very important.I believe comments should always be positive and aimed at making the other person feel better. Negative feedback, somehow, comes always at the wrong moment and I prefer, and suggest to everybody, to provide it very very carefully.

As a scientist, how does your image affect how seriously you are taken by colleagues?
Confidence and professionality are what colleagues notice and this requires not only scientific preparation but also being comfortable in your own skin.

Have you any words of wisdom to offer to young women?
Don’t let fancy clothes and accessories overshadow your personality.

Crazy Weather Outfit Ideas

I don’t know what the weather is like where you are, but here in Dublin its raining, shocking I know! Not only is it raining but it is alternating between sunny and warm to rainy, really gusty and cold. So, as you can imagine there is major wardrobe stress happening here. It’s so cold at times that I can’t decide if I should wear my Winter coat or something lighter. When I did wear my Winter coat a couple of days ago the temperature decided to go up 3 degrees while immediately after I left the house…I think the weather God hates me!

If this is something that sounds familiar to you and you would like to your wardrobe to work by keeping you try and warm but not boiling if the temperature increases then take a look at my crazy weather outfit ideas.

  1. Go for a lighter coats that you can easily add layers under and then easily remove.
  2. As much as I love ballerinas I also hate rain on my feet, so I always go for an ankle boot or brogue when the weather is hit or miss.
  3. Spring dresses are great, they have lovely patterns and colours and  they are easily worn on their own or you can throw a cardigan over them. Keep legs toasty with tights and mix it around by choosing a plain dress and patterned tights.
  4. There are so many funky jumpers in stores now that are lighter in weight. If you are worried you’ll be too warm with this and a coat then choose a lighter coat like a parka that can be easily taken off and stuffed in your jacket or alternatively wear something under your jumper so you can remove the jumper and keep on the parka.
  5. Keep smiling despite the dreary weather with some bright florals or funky patterns.
